Bandsaw Operation Training

Safe operating method

This procedure outlines the correct method for bandsaw use within the shed and applies to all members using the Durden or Hafco Woodmaster bandsaws.

Wood cutting only

The saws are set up for wood only and are intended for curves, resawing, and deep cuts.

• 👓 Safety glasses: worn at all times.
• 🎧 Ear protection: worn during noisy operations.
• 🥾 Footwear: fully enclosed, non-slip safety footwear.

• 🧥 Clothing: no loose clothing, dangling jewellery, or unrestrained long hair.
• ❌ Gloves: do not wear while operating the bandsaw.

• Inspect the power cord and plug for any damage.
• Confirm a current Test and Tag label.
• Check blade condition, guards, and guides.
• Clear the table and 1 m around the saw.

• Verify blade tension and upper guard height.
• Use only suitable wood work pieces.
• Ensure the machine is off and disconnected before adjustments.

• Set the upper guard no more than 10 mm above the work piece.
• Feed the work steadily; do not force the cut.
• Keep hands at least 100 mm from the blade.

• Use a push-stick or sled when needed.
• Use dust extraction.
• Confirm the blade runs straight and does not wobble.

• Maintain steady pressure for curves, resawing, and deep cuts.
• Prevent curved work pieces from spinning when cross cutting.
• Get help for large work pieces.

• Use a jig or sled if the work piece has no flat bottom.
• Never clear small pieces while the blade is moving.
• If you need to back out of a cut, switch off first and wait for the blade to stop.

• Switch the machine OFF.
• Wait for the blade to stop completely. before removing work piece
• Remove offcuts and sawdust from the table and floor.

• Lower the upper blade guard.
• Clean the table with a brush, not your hands.
• Return all tools to storage and leave the area tidy.

Training

Only trained and assessed personnel may operate the bandsaw.

Injury

Action all injuries immediately and inform the duty manager.

Isolation

Isolate and lock out equipment if needed until it is safe.
